Lehkonen completes Finland’s Olympic quarter-final comeback
Switzerland’s two-goal lead disappeared before an overtime winner.
Source publication date:
Artturi Lehkonen scored at 3:23 of overtime as Finland defeated Switzerland 3–2 in the Olympic men’s quarter-finals. The reigning champions trailed by two goals for much of the contest before recovering in the third period to remain in medal contention.
Damien Riat opened the scoring after a Finnish turnover behind the net, and Nino Niederreiter doubled Switzerland’s lead seventy-two seconds later. The Swiss defended their advantage through a scoreless second period despite increased Finnish pressure and time in the attacking zone.
Finland’s persistence eventually produced the equaliser and an additional period, where Lehkonen ended the contest. Eetu Luostarinen said the bench had remained positive despite the deficit, while Swiss forward Philipp Kurashev stressed the difficulty of accepting elimination after his team had largely followed its game plan.
