The Polish world number fifty recovered from a set down in Miami.
Source publication date:
Magda Linette defeated Iga Swiatek 1–6, 7–5, 6–3 in the Miami Open second round. The world number fifty ended her compatriot’s seventy-three-match winning streak in WTA opening matches, becoming one of the tournament’s earliest major upset winners.
Swiatek controlled the first set with two service breaks and eighty-eight percent of first-serve points won. Linette then increased her aggression, secured a crucial second-set break and carried the momentum into a 5–2 lead in the deciding set.
Swiatek saved two match points while holding for 5–3, but Linette completed the win on her fourth opportunity. It was Linette’s second consecutive comeback from a set down in Miami, following her opening victory over Varvara Gracheva, and set a meeting with Alexandra Eala.
