Ljungblom scores twice as Sweden defeat Germany in Olympic opener
Germany’s return to the women’s tournament began with a group B loss.
Source publication date:
Sweden defeated Germany 4–1 in the opening game of the Olympic women’s hockey tournament. Lina Ljungblom scored twice, including Sweden’s hundredth Olympic goal, as the Swedes made a successful start after both countries had earned places through qualification events.
Germany appeared at the Games for the first time since 2014, making every member of its squad an Olympic debutant. Sweden had also won the countries’ only previous Olympic meeting, while its players regarded stronger play at even strength and on the power play as decisive.
Both teams had a day off for the opening ceremony before returning to group B action. Germany was due to face Japan and Sweden would meet hosts Italy, leaving each country with further opportunities to build on the lessons from its first appearance in Milan.
