Lollobrigida wins five thousand metres by one tenth
The Italian secured her second Olympic title as four skaters finished within three tenths.
Source publication date:
Francesca Lollobrigida won the Olympic women’s five thousand metres, finishing one tenth of a second ahead of Merel Conijn. Ragne Wiklund earned bronze, and Sandrine Tas placed fourth, with all four leading skaters separated by only three tenths.
Conijn had set a time of 6:46.27 before Wiklund fell seven hundredths short. Lollobrigida more closely matched Wiklund’s earlier splits, then sprinted from the final backstretch to complete a 31.8-second last lap and preserve the narrow winning margin.
The title added to Lollobrigida’s three-thousand-metre gold earned on her birthday earlier in the Games. Martina Sáblíková finished eleventh in her final Olympic appearance after illness had forced her to miss the shorter distance, completing her sixth Winter Olympics.
