MacKinnon’s late goal sends Canada into the Olympic final
Canada recovered from two goals down against defending champions Finland.
Source publication date:
Nathan MacKinnon scored a power-play winner with thirty-five seconds remaining as Canada defeated Finland 3–2 in the Olympic men’s hockey semi-final. The Canadians recovered from a two-goal deficit to end the defending champions’ hopes of retaining their title.
Mikko Rantanen and Erik Haula put Finland ahead before Sam Reinhart and Shea Theodore brought Canada level. Connor McDavid assisted twice while wearing the captain’s letter in the absence of injured Sidney Crosby, reaching thirteen points for the tournament.
Canada outshot Finland 39–17, but Juuse Saros and disciplined Finnish defending kept the contest close until the final minute. An unsuccessful offside challenge left MacKinnon’s goal standing, sending Canada to the gold-medal game and Finland to the bronze match.
