Kira Bester and Bernardo Pereira won the senior surfski singles at the Madeira Canoe Ocean Racing World Cup on 1–3 May. Bester completed the women’s race in 1:21:29.83, ahead of Rosemary Edwards in 1:26:30.03 and Carlota Duarte in 1:40:35.24.
Pereira took men’s gold in 1:15:19.60. Marin Lanee finished second in 1:15:50.07, with Mateus Ornelas third in 1:20:04.94. The Portuguese winner brought experience as an Under-23 world champion and senior world bronze medallist, while Bester was the reigning senior world champion.
A five-kilometre short race and relay programme in Calheta Bay complemented the longer competition. The format gave spectators a more compact setting in which to follow paddlers. The official report confirmed the opening-stage results and recorded the next planned circuit stop in Tahiti for 31 July–2 August, without presenting that later competition as completed.
