Daniela Maier won Olympic women’s ski cross gold in Livigno, upgrading the bronze medal she earned in Beijing. Fanny Smith took silver for Switzerland, while defending champion Sandra Näslund won bronze after reaching the final alongside the German.

Maier set the fastest seeding time, twenty-one hundredths ahead of Näslund, and maintained her form through the knockout rounds. Her semi-final opened with a substantial lead that she protected to qualify for the medal race.

Marielle Berger Sabbatel won a photo finish for the other place in Maier’s semi-final. Smith and Näslund advanced from the second heat, leaving the eventual champion to defeat two experienced Olympic medallists in the big final and claim her first Olympic title.
