Marche and Gawad survive opening Chicago battles
The Windy City afternoon session included a major upset and two saved match balls.

Gregoire Marche defeated Diego Elias in five games as the Windy City Open began in Chicago. The Frenchman established a two-game lead, lost the next two and recovered in the decider to record only his second victory against Elias in their long-running rivalry.
Karim Gawad also needed five games against late entrant Yannick Wilhelmi. The former world champion saved two match balls in the deciding game before securing his place in the second round.
Top seeds Mostafa Asal and Hania El Hammamy advanced in straight games during the afternoon session. Joel Makin returned with a four-game win over Declan James, while Abhay Singh defeated Fares Dessouky and Anahat Singh overcame Zeina Mickawy.
