Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of Australia’s opening Men’s T20 World Cup match against Ireland after being struck in the groin during training. The ICC reported that the injury caused internal bleeding and required rest and rehabilitation before he could return to play.

Australia responded by arranging for standby player Steve Smith to travel to Sri Lanka. His arrival was intended to allow time to acclimatise and prepare should the squad need him during the tournament, rather than confirming an immediate replacement in the playing team.

Smith had last appeared in a T20 international in February 2024 and remained a regular member of Australia’s Test side. Marsh’s absence required Australia to change its leadership arrangements for the opener while assessing his recovery.
