Mbappe’s late penalty secures Madrid victory over Rayo
The Bernabeu match ended 2-1 after both sides hit the woodwork.
Source publication date:
Real Madrid beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1 at the Bernabeu through a late Kylian Mbappe penalty. The result delivered a sixth consecutive league victory for Alvaro Arbeloa’s team after Rayo had cancelled Vinicius Junior’s first-half opener and threatened to take a point.
Vinicius scored in the sixteenth minute with a finish into the top corner. Madrid had already been forced to replace injured Jude Bellingham with Brahim Diaz. Jorge de Frutos equalised early in the second half, setting up an open contest with opportunities at both ends.
Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga struck the woodwork before Madrid’s decisive penalty. Nobel Mendy fouled Brahim, and Mbappe converted to register his twenty-second league goal of the campaign.
