Mboko wins teenage rivalry decider to reach Miami quarterfinals
The Canadian beat Andreeva in three sets after twenty-one consecutive holds.
Source publication date:
Victoria Mboko defeated Mirra Andreeva 7–6(4), 4–6, 6–0 to reach her fourth WTA 1000 quarterfinal. The two-hour-seventeen-minute Miami match gave the nineteen-year-old Canadian a 2–1 lead in their rivalry after earlier meetings in Adelaide and Doha.
The first twenty-one games went with serve before Andreeva broke from 40–15 down to take the second set. Mboko responded by breaking early in the decider and conceding only three points behind her first serve as she swept the final six games.
Andreeva received treatment for a back problem during the closing stages. Mboko improved her season record to 19–5 and advanced to face Karolina Muchova, who had beaten her in February’s Doha final, providing another opportunity to respond to a previous defeat.
