Mheuka's late goal gives England U19s victory over Poland
England won 1-0 in Portugal to revive its European Championship qualifying campaign.
Source publication date:
Shumaira Mheuka scored in the eighty-sixth minute as England's men's under-nineteen team defeated Poland 1-0 in European Championship qualifying. The victory was Will Antwi's side's first of the elite round and brought England level with Serbia and Portugal on three points.
Poland had been reduced to ten players after Kamil Nowogonski received a straight red card in the eleventh minute. England created opportunities through Jesse Derry and Mheuka, but goalkeeper Mateusz Jelen repeatedly prevented an early breakthrough.
Poland improved after half-time and Oliver Whatmuff saved attempts from Konrad Ciszek and Mateusz Dziewiatowski. Mheuka eventually supplied the decisive finish, leaving England with a final meeting against host Portugal and a chance to contest the group's single qualification place.
