Michael O’Neill takes temporary Blackburn management role
The Irish FA approved an arrangement allowing his return for the Italy play-off.
Source publication date:
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill joined Blackburn Rovers under a temporary arrangement approved by the Irish Football Association. The February 13 announcement confirmed that he would return for Northern Ireland’s FIFA World Cup play-off against Italy in March.
The association said Blackburn had sought an experienced manager and that the arrangement protected national-team planning. O’Neill was expected to attend the club’s Championship match at Queens Park Rangers the following day.
O’Neill said daily training and club matches would keep him closely involved in tactical work while improving his view of Northern Ireland players in the Championship. Irish FA chief executive Patrick Nelson supported the move as useful preparation ahead of the play-off in Bergamo.
