Japan defeated England 1-0 at Wembley through a first-half Kaoru Mitoma goal, becoming the first Asian team to beat the Three Lions. It was England's final home fixture before the men's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Mitoma finished past Jordan Pickford in the 23rd minute after Keito Nakamura supplied the pass. England enjoyed extensive possession but found goalkeeper Zion Suzuki difficult to beat, while Ayase Ueda hit the woodwork as Japan threatened a second goal.

Thomas Tuchel's substitutes helped create late chances, with Marcus Rashford denied and Jarrod Bowen firing the rebound wide. Harry Maguire had a header cleared and Lewis Hall tested Suzuki, but England could not produce an equaliser.
