Miura and Kihara win Japan’s first Olympic pairs gold
A record free skate lifted the world champions from fifth place to the title.

Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara won Japan’s first Olympic pairs figure skating medal, taking gold after rising from fifth place. Their free skate earned a record 158.13 points and brought their overall score to 231.24 following an error in the short programme.
Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava moved up to silver with 221.75 points, securing Georgia’s first medal at a Winter Olympics. Short-programme leaders Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin finished third with 219.09 after a side-by-side jump error in their free skate.
Hungary’s Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko placed fourth with a personal-best total. Defending champions Wenjing Sui and Cong Han finished fifth and confirmed that the performance ended their skating careers. Nineteen pairs had entered the opening segment.
