Muller scores in overtime as Switzerland win women’s hockey bronze
The Swiss defeated Sweden to earn their second Olympic medal.
Source publication date:
Alina Muller scored with fifty-one seconds left in overtime as Switzerland defeated Sweden 2–1 in the Olympic women’s bronze-medal game. A give-and-go with Ivana Wey created the decisive chance, which Muller finished for her fourth goal of the tournament.
Sinja Leemann scored Switzerland’s regulation goal in a defensive contest featuring strong performances from both goalkeepers. Sweden finished with a 32–25 shot advantage, but Andrea Braendli’s saves, including thirteen in the third period, helped keep the Swiss in the game.
Switzerland earned only its second Olympic women’s hockey medal, repeating a bronze-game victory over Sweden from 2014. Sweden finished fourth and was unable to end a twenty-year wait for an Olympic medal, while Muller celebrated another podium result after participating in the earlier Swiss success as a teenager.
