Netherlands retain European women’s water polo title
A penalty shootout settled the final against Hungary as Greece claimed bronze.

The Netherlands retained the European women’s water polo title by defeating Hungary 5–3 in a shootout after a 10–10 final in Funchal. The victory delivered the Dutch team’s seventh European gold and fourteenth medal overall, following its championship success in 2024.
Goalkeeper Laura Aarts saved Rita Keszthelyi’s attempt in the second penalty round. Lola Moolhuijzen then converted the Netherlands’ fifth shot to complete a perfect Dutch shootout, deciding a final that remained level after regulation time.
Greece defeated Italy 15–8 in the bronze-medal match, taking its European medal total to six. Simone van de Kraats received the final’s most valuable player award, while Spain’s Bea Ortiz finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with twenty-five goals.
