The New Zagreb Classic attracted 506 players from 36 federations for its 2026 edition at the Sheraton hotel. The tournament ran from 30 January to 1 February and became Croatia’s largest classical open by participation, according to FIDE’s event report.
Players entered five rating-based sections of approximately one hundred competitors each. All five rounds took place across a single weekend, offering a shorter schedule for participants balancing chess with work or school. The classical time control was ninety minutes with a thirty-second increment.
Ukraine’s Vladyslav Larkin won the top section ahead of Vinko Malada and Nicolas Perossa. The event also included juniors, titled players and about thirty previously unrated adults. Organisers initially established the tournament to give local young players stronger competitive opportunities without requiring foreign travel.
