Ning breaks Olympic fifteen hundred metres record for gold
The Chinese skater ended Stolz’s winning run as Kjeld Nuis earned bronze.
Source publication date:
Ning Zhongyan won the Olympic men’s fifteen hundred metres in 1:41.98, lowering the previous record by 1.23 seconds. Jordan Stolz took silver, 0.77 seconds behind, while defending champion Kjeld Nuis finished another seven hundredths back for bronze.
Ning raced against Nuis and overcame an inside-lane starting draw that he considered less favourable. A lap below twenty-six seconds between seven hundred and eleven hundred metres established the gap he needed to resist the Dutchman’s finishing effort.
Stolz skated in the final pair and could not match Ning’s time after winning the five hundred and thousand metres. Nuis added bronze to his consecutive Olympic titles in the distance, becoming the first fifteen-hundred-metre skater with two golds and another medal.
