Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five runs in Kandy but failed to reach the men’s T20 World Cup semifinals. Pakistan posted 212 for eight and needed to hold the hosts to 147 for qualification; Sri Lanka instead finished on 207 for six.
Fakhar Zaman and Sahibzada Farhan shared a record 176-run opening partnership before Pakistan lost eight wickets for thirty-four runs. Farhan’s century lifted his tournament tally to 383, surpassing Virat Kohli’s previous record for runs in a single men’s T20 World Cup edition.
Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 76 from 31 balls brought Sri Lanka close, including three successive sixes in the final over. New Zealand advanced on superior net run rate, joining England and South Africa in the semifinals while Pakistan and Sri Lanka concluded their campaigns.
