Source publication date:
Hungary’s women defeated Azerbaijan 1-0 at Pancho Aréna to move to the top of their World Cup qualifying group. Emőke Pápai scored in first-half stoppage time, giving Alexandra Szarvas’s team four points from its opening two matches.
Hungary created repeated chances before Pápai finished inside the penalty area from Sára Pusztai’s pass. The pressure continued after the break, with Zsófia Mayer striking the crossbar late in the game, but the home side could not increase its advantage.
The clean sheet secured Hungary’s first victory after an opening draw with Andorra. Szarvas praised the team’s control while identifying finishing as an area for improvement. North Macedonia, who beat Andorra 3-0, were Hungary’s next opponents on 14 April.
