The American ended a four-match losing record in their rivalry.
Source publication date:
Jessica Pegula defeated Belinda Bencic 6–3, 7–6(5) to reach her second Indian Wells quarterfinal. The American had lost all four previous meetings without winning a set, but reversed that record during a one-hour-forty-eight-minute fourth-round match.
Pegula struck eight aces and twenty-eight winners while taking forty-one percent of points on Bencic’s first serve. The Swiss recovered from 5–3 down in the second set to lead 6–5, forcing Pegula to hold under pressure and send it to a tiebreak.
Pegula established a 5–2 tiebreak advantage and converted her third match point to finish. The Dubai champion reached the last eight at all four tournaments she had played that season and advanced to meet Elena Rybakina in another significant quarterfinal.
