Jessica Pegula returned to the Charleston Open as defending champion and top seed after reaching the quarterfinals at nine consecutive tour events. Speaking during media day, the world number five described a balanced style built around redirecting opponents’ pace and taking the ball early.

That sequence included a Dubai title, a Wuhan final and seven semifinal appearances. Pegula said improvements to her serve had become an important part of her game, helping a player who relies on precision alongside the tour’s more powerful and athletic competitors.

The ten-time singles champion developed her tennis at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in nearby Hilton Head Island. She also welcomed Charleston’s move to equal prize money with a men’s 500 tournament, as she prepared to begin her title defence against Yulia Putintseva.
