Britain’s most decorated Paralympian ended a career spanning swimming and cycling.
Source publication date:
Dame Sarah Storey announced the end of her competitive career on 9 July after nine Paralympic Games. Her 30 medals included 19 golds, establishing her as Britain’s most successful Paralympian across a career in two sports.
Storey first competed in swimming at Barcelona 1992 and continued in the pool through Athens 2004. Across four swimming Games she collected five golds, eight silvers and three bronzes before moving into Para cycling. Her cycling achievements included four gold medals at London 2012.
The retirement announcement closed the competitive chapter without ending her involvement in disability sport. ParalympicsGB described her intention to continue advocacy and support for Para sport. The distinction matters for a figure whose influence extended beyond individual results: retirement from racing was confirmed, while future contributions would take place in other roles.
