Pellegrino wins farewell World Cup sprint in Lake Placid
Heggen and Grahn followed the Italian’s decisive acceleration on the final climb.
Source publication date:
Federico Pellegrino won the freestyle sprint in Lake Placid at his final World Cup appearance, claiming his first individual victory in more than three years. The thirty-five-year-old Italian finished in 2:35.01 after a decisive burst on the last climb opened a substantial gap before the stadium.
Lars Heggen finished second, 1.24 seconds behind, narrowly ahead of Anton Grahn by four-hundredths. Pellegrino had progressed through a difficult quarterfinal and advanced from the semifinal as a lucky loser before finding the winning acceleration in the final on a twisting, demanding course.
The victory brought his career total to eighteen World Cup wins. Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo skipped the sprint after securing its season title, focusing instead on the remaining distance event and recovery from concussion.
