Perry Malik wins Toronto’s only opening-round seeding upset

Perry Malik delivered the only seeding upset on the opening day of the McMillan Goodfellow Classic at Toronto Athletic Club. The English player recovered from a 2-1 deficit to beat compatriot Tom Walsh 11-9, 6-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7.
His victory was one of four five-game contests at the Copper tournament. Sam Osborne-Wylde defeated Jeremias Azaña in the longest match, lasting 77 minutes, while Simon Herbert and Ronald Palomino also won after trailing by two games to one.
Ivan Perez, Leandro Romiglio, Shahjahan Khan and David Bernet progressed in straight games. Their victories completed the second-round lineup, where the tournament’s leading eight seeds were due to enter the competition.
