The former India captain discussed grassroots access and her leadership ambitions in an FIH profile.
Source publication date:
Former India captain Rani Rampal used an FIH profile to call for stronger support keeping girls in sport through their teenage years. She identified grassroots facilities, education, safe environments and encouragement from families as essential conditions for lasting participation.
Rampal described the obstacles she faced during her own development, including financial limits and social pressure. Her international career culminated in leading India at the Tokyo Olympics, where the women's team came close to winning its first medal.
As an FIH WISH candidate, she sought strategic leadership skills and international examples that could inform work beyond playing. Rampal proposed a grassroots mentorship model linking young players with national-team athletes, combining access, confidence-building and long-term development within Indian hockey.
