Roy squeezes into world indoor sprint semi-final
The Irish sprinter advanced by one thousandth of a second in Toruń.

Lauren Roy qualified for the women’s sixty-metre semi-finals at the World Indoor Championships after a tense wait in Toruń. She finished fourth in her heat in 7.25 seconds and secured one of three time-based qualifying places by just 0.001 of a second.
Ciara Neville also placed fourth in her heat, running 7.31, but did not advance on her return to a major championship after five years. Roy said reaching the semi-finals had been her target for the competition.
Ireland’s eight-hundred-metre runners missed their finals. Mark English finished fourth in his semi-final in 1:46.70 after being caught late, while Maeve O’Neill ran 2:02.46 for sixth in her race after an aggressive opening lap.
