England Athletics shared the experiences of Run Leader Mentors Sue and Tony, describing the support they received from running communities during cancer treatment. Both had returned to running later in life before helping to establish or lead local groups.

Tony underwent surgery in June 2025 and began monthly treatment for neuroendocrine cancer. His group maintained regular contact through recovery. Sue, diagnosed with breast cancer while preparing for her ninth London Marathon, described members adapting sessions from walking to gradual run-and-walk activity.

Sue later helped create a local 5K Your Way group for people affected by cancer. She was preparing for her deferred marathon, while Tony continued running when able alongside treatment. The account emphasised their personal experiences and continuing community roles.
