Elena Rybakina defeated fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6–3, 6–3 to begin her Miami Open campaign. The seventy-seven-minute victory followed her Indian Wells final appearance and gave the world number two an eighteenth tour-level win of the season.
Putintseva recovered an early service break to level the opening set at 3–3, but Rybakina broke again in the eighth game and served it out. Additional breaks in the seventh and ninth games of the second set completed the win.
Rybakina extended her sequence of successful opening matches at WTA events to twenty-two. She advanced to face Marta Kostyuk, who had beaten Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets, while entering the next round as the season’s tour leader in both winners and aces.
