Saarbrucken seals Champions League semifinal berth
The defending champion beat Hennebont again despite two defeats for Fan Zhendong in the return encounter.
Source publication date:
Saarbrucken advanced to the men’s Champions League final four after beating Hennebont 3–2 at home in its quarterfinal return. The reigning three-time champion had taken a commanding 3–0 lead in France and completed the tie with another team victory ahead of hosting the May championship weekend.
Fan Zhendong lost both of his singles matches, falling in five games to Rubio Wen and Simon Gauzy. Those results kept Hennebont competitive in the return encounter but did not erase Saarbrucken’s advantage from the opening leg.
Truls Moregardh supplied two wins, defeating Gauzy and later Lev Katsman in four games. Darko Jorgic added a four-game victory against Vladimir Sidorenko, giving the German side the points needed to complete qualification.
