Sabalenka beats Osaka with eight aces and no double faults
The top seed reached a fourteenth consecutive tour quarterfinal.
Source publication date:
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Naomi Osaka 6–2, 6–4 to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals. The world number one reversed their only previous tour meeting, at the 2018 US Open, in a contest between players who had each won four Grand Slam singles titles.
Sabalenka hit eight aces without a double fault and was not broken, winning thirty-nine of fifty-six service points. She moved Osaka around the court with changes of pace and height, and three service breaks supplied the margins needed across the two sets.
The victory extended Sabalenka’s sequence to fourteen consecutive WTA quarterfinal appearances, excluding the season-ending Finals. She became the first player to maintain such a run since Justine Henin’s twenty-five-event sequence between 2006 and 2008, continuing a sustained period of high-level consistency.
