Javokhir Sindarov clinches the Candidates with a round to spare
A draw against Anish Giri secured the right to challenge Gukesh D.
Source publication date:
Javokhir Sindarov secured first place in the FIDE Candidates Tournament on 14 April, before the final round. His draw against Anish Giri left him two points ahead with only one game remaining.
The victory earned him the right to challenge Gukesh D for the World Championship. Winning the Candidates selects a challenger; it does not award the world title itself.
The women’s competition remained undecided at the same stage, with Vaishali and Bibisara Assaubayeva sharing the lead. Their separate final-round outcome therefore could not be treated as confirmed in the 14 April report. This historical entry preserves that distinction.
