Siniakova outlasts Fernandez in 208-minute Indian Wells match
A deciding tiebreak settled the season’s second-longest contest to that point.
Source publication date:
Katerina Siniakova defeated Leylah Fernandez 5–7, 6–4, 7–6(1) to reach the Indian Wells third round. The three-hour-twenty-eight-minute match involved 268 points and thirty-seven break opportunities, finishing only three minutes short of the season’s longest contest to that point.
Siniakova converted her first break chance on the tenth attempt early in the second set. Fernandez recovered from 3–0 down before the Czech forced a decider, then the Canadian led 3–1 in the third as another momentum change appeared possible.
Siniakova broke back and held under pressure to force the tiebreak, where Fernandez’s forehand errors proved costly. The win levelled their rivalry at two victories each and set a first professional meeting with defending champion Mirra Andreeva in the next round.
