Source publication date:
Southport announced the signing of central defender Matty Williams. The ball-playing centre-back moved to the Sandgrounders after a career that included Accrington Stanley, loan experience with Lancaster City and an extended period at Chester.
Williams signed his first professional agreement at Accrington in 2019 before joining Chester in 2021 following a successful trial. He made 35 appearances and scored five goals in his first campaign there, winning the supporters' player-of-the-season award.
He subsequently contributed 44 appearances and three goals in the next season as Chester developed a strong defensive record. Williams had made more than 120 appearances for the club before a serious knee injury in September 2024 led to a lengthy absence.
