Sundling wins Lahti sprint on return from illness
Svahn completed a Swedish one-two, with Germany’s Rydzek taking third.
Source publication date:
Jonna Sundling won the women’s World Cup sprint in Lahti after missing the previous weekend’s Falun races with a cold. She led qualification and then drove a fast pace from the start of the final, resisting Swedish teammate Linn Svahn’s challenge in the closing section.
Germany’s Coletta Rydzek took third, preventing a Swedish sweep, while Johanna Hagstroem and Moa Ilar finished fourth and fifth. Sundling earned her fourth individual World Cup victory of the season in her first race since the Winter Olympics.
Soft snow and underlying ice made conditions demanding despite sunshine at the Finnish venue. Sprint standings leader Maja Dahlqvist and overall leader Jessie Diggins had both been eliminated before the semifinals, creating opportunities for the eventual finalists to contest the podium.
