Svitolina advances after Badosa retires in Dubai
The Ukrainian recovered from 4–1 down before the match stopped after its opening set.
Source publication date:
Elina Svitolina advanced to Dubai’s third round after Paula Badosa retired following the opening set. Badosa led 4–1, but Svitolina won five consecutive games to take the set 6–4 before the Spaniard sought physiotherapy treatment and ended the match.
The result extended Svitolina’s record against Badosa to three victories without defeat. Her previous wins had come at Eastbourne in 2021 and in Billie Jean King Cup competition during the preceding season.
Svitolina progressed to face Belinda Bencic, who advanced through a walkover after Sara Bejlek withdrew with an abdominal injury. Both players had recently returned to the top ten, becoming the first mothers to occupy positions there at the same time.
