Svitolina survives Gauff marathon to reach Dubai final
A three-hour semifinal brought the Ukrainian back to the tournament’s title match after eight years.
Source publication date:
Elina Svitolina reached the Dubai final by defeating Coco Gauff 6–4, 6–7, 6–4 in three hours and three minutes. The Ukrainian needed six match points across the contest, recovering after losing a lengthy second-set tiebreak to secure her first Dubai final since 2018.
Gauff saved four match points in that tiebreak and won it 15–13. The deciding set remained close until Svitolina held through an extended game at 4–4, then broke to finish the match and move into her third final at the tournament.
Svitolina’s victory set up a championship meeting with Jessica Pegula. It also marked her first WTA 1000 final since Rome in 2018, ending a gap of more than seven years at that level.
