Sweden secured the final place in the Olympic men’s quarter-finals with a 5–1 qualification-playoff victory over Latvia. Two goals in forty-one seconds during the opening period gave the Swedes control at Milan’s Santagiulia arena and shaped the rest of the contest.

Adrian Kempe opened the scoring from a puck directed towards goal by Joel Eriksson Ek. Captain Gabriel Landeskog quickly doubled the lead, and Filip Forsberg added another in the second period after a pass from Erik Karlsson.

Latvia continued to compete and replied through Eduards Tralmaks, but could not overturn Sweden’s advantage. The result sent Sweden into a quarter-final against the United States on the following day and ended Latvia’s tournament with a tenth-place finish, leaving its players disappointed by the final outcome.
