Source publication date:
Sweden defeated hosts Italy 5–2 as the Olympic men’s hockey tournament began in Milan. Italy led early and held the score level for a substantial stretch of the second period, before Sweden’s greater attacking depth finally established a winning margin.
Sweden outshot Italy 60–22. Italian goalkeeper Damien Clara kept the hosts competitive with several saves before an injury required Davide Fadani to replace him in the third period. Mika Zibanejad and Gustav Forsling each contributed a goal and an assist.
Gabriel Landeskog, William Nylander and Victor Hedman also scored for Sweden, while Rasmus Dahlin provided three assists. Luca Frigo and Matt Bradley supplied Italy’s goals, with the hosts drawing encouragement from their defensive effort despite losing the first game of their home tournament.
