Iga Swiatek defeated qualifier Kayla Day 6–0, 7–6(2) in her Indian Wells opener. After a twenty-eight-minute first-set shutout, the second seed recovered from 5–1 down in the second, extending her WTA opening-match winning streak to seventy-three contests.

Day broke twice and threatened a third break as Swiatek struggled to sustain her initial level. The Polish player then won five consecutive games for a 6–5 lead, before the Californian held to force a tiebreak and briefly stop the recovery.

Swiatek raced to a 5–0 tiebreak advantage and completed the win, converting all five break opportunities across the match. She advanced to face Maria Sakkari, who had recently beaten her in Doha and defeated Lilli Tagger in the same Indian Wells round.
