Source publication date:
Switzerland defeated Italy 3–0 in the Olympic men’s qualification playoffs to reach a quarter-final against Finland. The result ended the hosts’ tournament at the Milano Rho arena after a patient Swiss performance built on puck possession and disciplined defending.
Nico Hischier scored and assisted twice, while Philipp Kurashev and captain Roman Josi supplied the other goals. Timo Meier added two assists and moved to seven tournament points. Switzerland scored twice on the power play and outshot Italy 51–20.
Leonardo Genoni made twenty saves for his second shutout of the Games. Italy worked hard but was kept scoreless for a second successive match. Swiss players welcomed qualification while recognising that their next opponent would offer a substantially different test in the knockout stage.
