Switzerland opened its Olympic men’s tournament with a 4–0 victory over France at Milan’s Santagiulia arena. Two quick goals during the first period gave the Swiss an early advantage, which they preserved through a composed performance against hard-working opposition.
Timo Meier scored twice, while Damien Riat and Janis Moser added the other goals. Leonardo Genoni stopped twenty-seven shots for his first Olympic shutout. French goalkeeper Antoine Keller made thirty-nine saves on his debut despite finishing on the losing side.
The victory gave Switzerland a strong beginning before its next game against Canada. French players regarded their response after the opening goals as encouraging, but acknowledged the need to generate a scoring return as they turned their attention to another preliminary fixture against Czechia.
