Mark English, Maeve O’Neill and Bori Akinola advanced from the opening heats at the World Indoor Championships in Toruń. English won his eight-hundred-metre heat in 1:46.42, taking control over the closing four hundred metres.

O’Neill initially finished third in her women’s eight-hundred-metre heat in 2:03.20. A disqualification for American Valery Tobias moved the Irish athlete into second and confirmed her passage to the next round at her senior championship debut.

Akinola secured automatic qualification in the sixty metres with 6.59 seconds, his fastest opening-round performance of the season. Emma Moore finished fifth in her eight-hundred-metre heat in 2:02.00 and did not advance, while describing the experience as useful preparation for future championships.
