Finnish linesperson Tiina Saarimaki ended her officiating career with the Olympic women’s hockey final in Milan. The assignment marked both the pinnacle and conclusion of a second sporting career that followed two decades playing hockey and appearances for Finland’s national teams.

Saarimaki began officiating after her final Finnish league appearance in 2018. She subsequently worked at four IIHF Women’s World Championships and earned Finnish Referee of the Year recognition twice, developing from an initial under-twelve assignment to the highest international level.

She said she wanted to finish while physically fit and mentally strong, rather than wait for declining performance. Her experience as a player helped establish the opportunity, but learning rules, signals and the demands of managing games remained a substantial part of the transition.
