Toluca defeated San Diego FC 4-0 at Estadio Nemesio Díez to advance from their Concacaf Champions Cup round-of-16 tie. The Mexican champions won 6-3 on aggregate, recovering from a first-leg defeat to reach the competition’s quarterfinals.
Jesús Angulo opened the scoring after Nicolás Castro’s shot struck the post. Paulinho then finished Jesús Gallardo’s cross with a backheel early in the second half, and Angulo added another close-range goal three minutes later to extend Toluca’s control.
Gallardo completed the result with a deflected shot in stoppage time. Toluca advanced after losing an opening leg for the first time since the competition’s 2008 format change. Their next opponent would be the winner of the Galaxy’s tie against Mount Pleasant.
