Tomljanovic and Galfi defeat Austin major champions
Venus Williams and Bianca Andreescu lost their opening matches after receiving wild cards.

Ajla Tomljanovic and Dalma Galfi eliminated two former Grand Slam champions in Austin’s opening round. Tomljanovic defeated Venus Williams 6–4, 6–1, while Galfi overcame Bianca Andreescu 6–3, 5–7, 6–4 in a match lasting two hours and eleven minutes.
Williams led 3–1 in the first set before Tomljanovic turned the contest around. The Australian controlled key extended games in the second set and advanced to face Iva Jovic, who had beaten Anna Blinkova in straight sets.
Andreescu was playing her first tour main-draw match since October after collecting two ITF titles in January. She saved two match points against Galfi but could not complete another recovery, ending her return at the first hurdle.
