Tomljanovic ousts Jovic to reach Austin quarterfinals

Ajla Tomljanovic reached the Austin quarterfinals for a second consecutive year by defeating Iva Jovic 4–6, 6–4, 6–4. The Australian recovered after losing the opening set against the world number eighteen, who had become the highest remaining seed following Jessica Pegula’s withdrawal.
Tomljanovic won eleven consecutive points during a three-game surge in the second set. In the decider, Jovic recovered from 4–2 down to level, but Tomljanovic won the final two games to secure the match and a meeting with Kimberly Birrell.
Peyton Stearns defeated Kaja Juvan 6–0, 6–2 to become the only seed in the quarterfinal field. Ashlyn Krueger also advanced, beating Anastasia Zakharova 7–5, 6–3 for her second successive win.
