Topping replaces injured Ireland captain Stirling
Knee ligament damage ended Paul Stirling’s World Cup, while Zimbabwe also changed its squad.
Source publication date:
Ireland captain Paul Stirling was ruled out of the remaining men’s T20 World Cup after scans revealed ligament damage in his right knee. He sustained the injury while taking a catch against Australia and aggravated it when attempting a quick single during the same match.
The event technical committee approved uncapped left-handed opener Sam Topping as his replacement in Ireland’s fifteen-player squad. Topping was training in nearby Chennai with the Northern Knights group, allowing him to provide immediate cover in conditions similar to those faced in Sri Lanka.
Lorcan Tucker was appointed to lead Ireland for the rest of the tournament, beginning against Oman. Zimbabwe also changed its squad, bringing Ben Curran in for injured veteran Brendan Taylor. Stirling was due to return home for rehabilitation ahead of Ireland’s domestic international summer.
