U.S. Ski and Snowboard partners with Google on AI analysis

Source publication date:
U.S. Ski and Snowboard and Google announced a collaboration on an experimental video-analysis tool for athlete training. Built on Google Cloud, the project aims to use smartphone footage to estimate body movement without requiring specialised sensor suits or a laboratory camera setup.
Google engineers worked with American freeski and snowboard teams in Austria and Colorado. Coaches can upload footage to a dashboard, where markerless motion analysis identifies body positions through winter clothing and equipment. The tool is intended to provide feedback close to real time.
The system also uses Gemini to support questions about the data and stores sessions for longer-term comparison. Athletes and coaches were continuing to prototype the tool before the Olympics, with training precision and mountain safety identified as its objectives.
